Just hearing the name of Shiko Munakata, I am sure many of you can be reminded of Munakata’s prints and paintings.
Shiko Munakata’s work has such a strong personality.
He had loved drawing since he was a child.
“I want to be Van Gogh!”
(Munakata thought Van Gogh meant a painter.)
He thought that even Ryuzaburo Umehara and Soutaro Yasui (they are one of the most famous painter in Showa period), who were considered like gods in the art, were only disciples of Westerners, and this is what led him to believe that “works born in japan is the real thing.”
Through his encounters with Muneyoshi Yanagi, the father of the Mingei movement, Kanjiro Kawai, and Shoji Hamada, Shiko Munakata became even more Munakata.
Muneyoshi Yanagi told him that “the most admirable and beautiful things are found in the universal rather than the rare”, and that his work changed dramatically from this point.
Munakata was called “the bear cub” by Kanjiro Kawai. In one of Kawai’s letters to Munakata, he wrote,
“It is our common sense today that human being is no better than an animal. This is because we are aware of the wisdom and instincts that reside in animals. You are a man has something to admire.”
“When I look at you, I feel the wild spirit of the time when people used to run around in the mountains and fields. You certainly arouse the wild spirit hidden in people.”
When Munakata visited Kyoto for the first time, he bowed deeply to the Kamo River, wondering if this was the sound of the Kamo River that has been flowing for 1,000 years.
As various anecdotes such as this one suggest, Munakata’s pure and innocent nature may have contributed to his extravagant style of paintings.
By coming into touch with the works of Shiko Munakata, we may realize what has been hidden within us without our realizing it.
